Psalm 119:1-2

Be Blameless And Seek The Lord

Let's begin with verse 1:

“How blessed and favored by God are those whose way is blameless [those with personal integrity, the upright, the guileless], Who walk in the law [and who are guided by the precepts and revealed will] of the Lord.”

Blessed and favoured by God as used here does not always equate material blessings, though it could, but being blessed means The Lord delights in you. You can be going through a rough patch and still be called blessed!

  • Blessed are those who way is blameless, can anyone be blameless? I think being blameless is being in right standing with God, just like He told Abraham  in Genesis 17:1, be blameless before Me… When your way is blameless, it means you are intentional about having integrity with God and man. It also means we when we sin, we acknowledge it before God and man (depending on the situation), and repent. The Psalmist calls this person blessed, its like having clean hands and a pure heart. Psalm 15:2-5 also expands on one whose way is blameless. Though Christ died for our sins, its not a ticket not to live a blameless live, it is a more reason to live a life worthy of His sacrifice. Another word for blameless is righteousness. The Lord loves the righteous, not those who pretend to be righteous or self-righteous.
  • In the second part of this verse, blessed are those who walk in the law of the Lord. The Law of the Lord is the Word of the Lord. This means you view your life through the lens of God’s word. Your thought process and decisions are influence by God’s word. Literally, God’s word is the guide for your life. For our lives to be guided by His word we must know it, both the Logos and Rhema word, His word concerning your life or situation.

Verse 2:

“Blessed and favored by God are those who keep His testimonies, And who [consistently] seek Him and long for Him with all their heart.”

Psalms 119:2 AMP

  • Those who keep His testimonies- What are His testimonies and how do we keep them? His testimonies are what speaks about Him. Here it is primarily His word. However, His testimonies can also be witness to His works in our lives. We are encouraged to not to forget both. To keep His word is mainly how He instructs Joshua in Joshua 1:8 (“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall read [and meditate on] it day and night, so that you may be careful to do [everything] in accordance with all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will be successful.”) To keep His word, we have to first read it, read it day and night and meditate on it, ponder it, ask questions, internalize it and obey it. This verse means you have to read and meditate on His word so much so that it is part of your speech and even if anything/ anyone deserts or departs from you or you lose it all, the word should not depart from you, it should be part of you. This is how we keep the testimonies of our Father.
  • Those who seek Him and long for Him with all their heart- This is not only seeking Him in times of trouble. It is seeking to walk with Him, to grow stronger in relationship with Him. To yearn for Him.  To explain this, lets look at Psalm 63:1 which says, “O God, You are my God; with deepest longing I will seek You; My soul [my life, my very self] thirsts for You, my flesh longs and sighs for You, In a dry and weary land where there is no water.” This is how we are encouraged to seek and long for Him. Similar to this is when most couples are dating, in love and getting to know each other. They think about each other most of the time, they care about each other, they make time for  themselves. They like to spend time together and look forward to spending time together. There are times when they go above and beyond for each other. This is what seeking God is like, this means you have fallen in love with Him and are getting to know Him. You make time for Him everyday, you think about Him, you think about His word, You want to hear from Him. He is the First Person to come to mind when you wake up and The Last One when you close your eyes to sleep. When He comes near, you know, when He is absent you know, when He loves on you, you know, when He’s not happy you know. This is what it is to seek Him. And as you seek Him, even during the day when you are busy with other things you long for Him, you long to recount things to Him, thank Him, praise Him, worship Him. The way relationships grow is making and spending time with the person you love and it is so with our Father.

Seek to know Him and you will never regret doing so!

Prayer: Father help us to seek and know You through Your word and any other way You choose to reveal Yourself to us, in Jesus' name. Amen!
