Who is the man governed by The Holy Spirit? How do you know you are led by Him? We know the fruits of The Spirit from Galatians 5:22-23, are evidence of His leading but how do we get these fruits? To know how and understand this we will look at our model Jesus Christ who showed us how this is done. But before that, let’s look at Romans 8:2, 5 and 8 which tells us some inner workings of one who is led by The Spirit:
- The law of The Spirit is at work in them - In Romans 8:2, it says, “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death”. The Spirit has a law, a working, a rule, it is to set us free from another law at work within us, the law of sin and death. The law of sin and death has always been at work in us, we were born with it (notice it’s sin and death) but when The Spirit comes, a different law takes over, a higher law, and when we let Him, His law frees us from the law of sin and death. It’s the power of The Holy Spirit, it breaks us free from the shackles of sin! A major indication you are fully governed by the law of The Spirit is that the sin that used to entice you no longer appeals to you because you yield to Him. That very thing (sin) that used to have control over you, gave you so much pleasure as you thought, that thing that was your high, you can stare right at it and say no to it, because the power of The Holy Spirit has made you free from it.
- The Mind of The Spirit - where is your mind? In Romans 8:5 AMP, it says “For those who are living according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh [which gratify the body], but those who are living according to the Spirit, [set their minds on] the things of the Spirit [His will and purpose].” Where is your mind? What do you set your mind on regularly? If all we think about is to seek to fill our pockets and bellies, and seek comfort here on earth, then there is a problem. While it might not be wrong to seek these things, it’s more about priority [Matthew 6:33]. There’s more to life than money, food, good houses, nice cars, etc. What’s more is to set your mind on the things of God, His ways, His will and purpose for your life. One who sets his mind on the things of God will please God, but one who seeks to gratify the flesh cannot please God [Romans 8:8].
With these workings inside of us, we soon begin to blossom with His fruits.
So how can we be governed by the Spirit? Let's look at Jesus. The New Testament is replete with instances where we see our Lord yield to the Holy Spirit, but today's focus is His choosing surrender in the Garden of Gethsemane. In Matthew 26:39-44, we see that Jesus’ will conflicts with The Father’s will, but He chooses to follow The Father’s will. To be governed by the Spirit is:
- choosing to seek, know and follow His will always.
- choosing to obey even when it costs you everything.
It always comes down to a choice, a decision to be subject to leading of The Holy Spirit. Paul stresses on this in Galatians 5:16 TPT:“Let me emphasize this: As you yield to the dynamic life and power of the Holy Spirit, you will abandon the cravings of your self-life.” So let us make a daily choice to yield and be governed by Him. It is amazing what God can do with a willing heart and an obedient mind!
Prayer: Our Lord and King, we come to You seeking to keep in step with Your Holy Spirit daily, just as You did even in very excruciating circumstances, help us to surrender our will to Yours, in Your name. Amen!
